Placing the Right Vaccine Order

Often times practices miss the mark when it comes to ordering the correct amount of vaccines. A surplus of vaccines may lead to spoilage or money wasted due to unused portions. However, if your practice orders on an as needed basis, there may be times when a vaccine is not available in times of demand. This often leads to compromised patient care, causing some patients to delay their immunization schedule or to miss the immunization entirely. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests following these steps to help your practice properly gauge the correct amount to order:

• Review past orders to determine how often you’ve ordered previously and to decide how much inventory you want to keep on hand

• Determine which vaccines you will need and when they will be used

• Conduct weekly inventories to ensure limited wasted vaccines
